Are hemp oil and cannabis oil the same? In this article, we discuss the differences between the two. Please note: the following article is not medical advice. Always seek medical advise from your physician. This article is for entertainment purposes only, and references only potential benefits.

After the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the first CBD-based drug, many people have become more interested in using CBD and hemp seed oils. However, many of these consumers cannot distinguish the benefits of hemp oil and CBD oil. Also, they sometimes refer to CBD oil as hemp oil and others hemp oil to CBD oil.

These two oils are very different:

  • Hemp oil comes from the stalk, flowers, and leaves of the hemp plant; while
  • Cannabis sativa seeds make hemp seed oil.

Hemp Seed Oil

It gets extracted from the seeds of a cannabis Sativa plant. The oil has many nutritional antioxidants such as gamma-linolenic acid and fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

It also has high levels of vitamin D and B.

The oil does not make you ‘high’ after taking it as it lacks tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and very little or sometimes no CBD.

The Uses of Hemp Seed Oil

You cannot use this oil for recreational purposes since it has little or no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) responsible for the psychoactive effects.

Most nutritional supplements use hemp seed oil because it is very rich in nutritious antioxidants, omega-6,  omega-3 fatty acids, and gamma-linolenic acid.

The oil manufactures fibers and clothes.

How Hemp Seed Oil Works

Most experts believe that this oil is crucial in maintaining your cardiovascular well-being. It does so by:

  • Improving your total cholesterol
  • Improving your triglycerides
  • Improving your low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
  • Improving your high-density lipoprotein cholesterol

However,  it is still unclear how it carries out all these functions, but more research is underway to understand how it fully works in the body.

The Benefits and Effects of Hemp Seed Oil

When this oil gets added to nutritional products like cookies or bread, it gets enriched with more nutrients. The oil is a rich source of essential amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids.

The oil may have other benefits such as:

  • Improving the condition of the skin
  • Immune system modification
  • Constipation reliever
  • Improving gastrointestinal conditions
  • Providing cardiovascular benefits

Lastly, this oil has other crucial components that researchers are still investigating and believe that they greatly benefit consumers.

How Hemp Seed Oil is Made

The hemp seed oil gets extracted from the hemp plant seeds. Since it does not come from the stem and flowers of the cannabis plant nor its leaves, this oil lacks THC.

The Side Effects and Risks of Hemp Seed Oil

The oil is very safe for consumption. However, although many people believe that it is a remedy for cardiovascular health, it may sometimes fail to perform this task in some people.

Its consumers have reported few instances of digestive issues; however, they rarely occur.

Since 0.3% or less of THC is in hemp seed oil, you are less likely to experience any psychoactive effects after using the oil.

CBD Oil

The market has three types of CBD oil, and each is different from the other. They include:

  • Broad-spectrum CBD oil
  • Full-spectrum CBD oil
  • CBD oil

Full-spectrum oil has all the cannabis plant’s compounds (inclusive of the THC), while a broad-spectrum CBD oil lacks THC and only contains few cannabis compounds. However, the CBD oil only contains CBD.

It is crucial to remember that since these are unregulated terms, most manufacturers use them interchangeably. When buying CBD oil, check its Certificate of Analysis to determine what the product contains.

The Uses of CBD Oil

Besides its antiepileptic effects, researchers are still studying it to know if it has any therapeutic benefits.

Some people use full-spectrum CBD oil for recreational purposes since it contains THC, therefore, psychoactive effects. They also use it to prevent vomiting and nausea.

Researchers believe that there is a possibility that this oil has terpenoids and phytocannabinoids, which may produce effects that are still under investigation.

How CBD Oil Works

Although researchers are still investigating how this oil works in the body, they have suggested that it:

  • Inhibits the reuptake of endocannabinoid
  • Activates the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1, which helps in pain regulation.
  • Increases the activity of serotine receptors

When you consume the full-spectrum CBD oil, its THC will bind with the CB1 receptor causing psychoactive effects.

The broad and full-spectrum CBD oils contain beta-caryophyllene. Beta-caryophyllene binds to CB2 receptors; however, researchers are investigating the effects of such a bond.

The Potential Benefits and Effects of CBD Oil

CBD oil has various components, and each is responsible for different potential benefits:

  • Its CBD component has neuroprotective, antianxiety, pain-relieving, antidepressive, anti-inflammatory, and antiepileptic effects,
  • Its THC compound has anti-nausea, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory effects,
  • Its cannabigerol compound has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects,
  • Its beta-caryophyllene compound has pain-relieving and antianxiety effects; while
  • Its cannabichromene compound has pain-relieving effects.

How to make CBD Oil

The oil gets extracted from the leaves and flowers of a cannabis plant. Manufacturers use various specialized extraction methods, including carbon dioxide extraction to get other components and a CBD rich extract from the leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant.

Side Effects and Risks of CBD Oil

Researchers believe that this oil is safe, and its side effects are limited. Although researchers lack full information about CBD products’ safety, they have studied the impact of CBD oil’s compounds.

For instance, a study conducted among 60 participants, and after six months of consuming 300mg of CBD daily, they reported no side effects. Another study also confirmed the same when they let their participants consume 1,500 mg daily of the CBD oil for 30 days.

Conclusion

After going through the two oils, are hemp oil and cannabis oil the same? That may be debatable. However, they all have many health benefits from consuming them, and they all come from the same plant species.
